Description
The Slice of Shoreview is an annual festival held to celebrate life in Shoreview, Minnesota. The “Slice”, as it has come to be known, takes place over the last weekend of July and incorporates a wide variety of family-oriented activities including a carnival, parade, art and craft fair, food vendors, various displays and demonstrations, talent show, lots of entertainment and, of course fireworks. Since the late 1990s, it has taken place at Island Lake County Park at the intersection of Interstate 694 and Victoria Street in Shoreview.
The Slice of Shoreview, named to suggest the “Taste of Minnesota”, began in 1989 as a one-day festival held in conjunction with the Turtle Man Triathlon at Turtle Lake County Park in Shoreview. It was intended to reflect a “slice” of the community. As luck would have it, that first Slice took place in a torrential downpour.
The next year, the event was moved to commemorate the new City Hall and Community Center and was primarily a city-run, one-day event featuring food and games. Local civic groups started appearing at the event in 1991 when the Shoreview Historical Society organized a historical bus tour with Dick Wedell and Sandy Martin acting as tour guides.
By 1993, three community events combined to create the Slice we know today. The Lake Johanna Fire Department, celebrating its 50th anniversary, planned to use the newly-renovated Island Lake County Park in Shoreview. Ramsey County was planning to have a Park reopening ceremony and the Slice planning committee was anticipating their August event. Mark Wocken, of the Fire Department, organized a meeting with the interested parties and the Slice moved to the Park with parking provided across the street at Deluxe Corporation. The Fire Department sponsored the fireworks, the Rockin’ Hollywoods and a public safety Open House. They remain actively involved in the event. At that time, the Slice also expanded to a three-day event, adding a carnival, church service, talent show, art fair, car show and parade.
When the event moved to Island Lake County Park, the City of Shoreview officially withdrew from the organizational committee but became the largest financial sponsor. Since the mission of the Slice Committee was to have an event featuring free admission and free parking, community fundraising has become essential.
Today, the Slice of Shoreview has been re-branded to Slice of Shoreview Days and is organized by an all-volunteer committee which oversees all aspects of the event. They are committed to presenting a “Slice” of Shoreview with local groups and businesses represented. Separate committees made up of a few more volunteers raise funds, hire entertainment, organize all the events and present each year’s Slice of Shoreview Days.
The Slice Committee also meets immediately after each event for an evaluative meeting. In January, the group gets together to start the planning in earnest for the July extravaganza.
